Coming up this weekend:

May ride to the Halifax Waterfront

Join us at 3155 Vincent Street on Sunday May 3 at 9:30am. For a ride from the North End of Halifax to the Halifax Waterfront.

We’re watching the Sunday weather forecast carefully. We aren’t able to reschedule our monthly rides, so we tend to tolerate some showers & cooler temperatures. But, if we do need to cancel due to weather conditions, we will post a notice on our website by 7:30am on the day of the ride.

Kidical Mass takes on local active transportation issues:

b’ringing Change

In May of last year, we presented to the HRM Transportation Standing Committee (TSC) to highlight the problems with the bike infrastructure that the city describes as “All Ages and Abilities”: it’s not safe enough for our kids to ride independently. We encouraged TSC members to incorporate kids into active transportation planning. Following our presentation, Councillor Cleary motioned for a staff report to get more information about our suggestions.

That report was recently completed, and came back to the Transportation Standing Committee during their April 23rd meeting.

We presented during public participation, encouraging committee members to implement the report’s suggestions: counting kids, engaging kids, and developing key performance indicators related to kids’ use of the bike network. Councillor Cleary’s motion to consider implementation in the next budget year passed. This means that including children & youth in active transportation planning and evaluation will be considered for the 2027/28 HRM budget. It feels good to have the transportation needs to children and youth acknowledged, and we’ll be watching closely during budget season to see how this moves forward.

In case you missed it…

Kidical Mass Media

This video has been making the rounds on social media. But it’s too good not to share again (and again). We think you’ll love this uplifting family cycling story, and the accompanying essay; courtesy of East Bay Kidical Mass.

That’s it for now!

We’re looking forward to riding with you on Sunday May 3rd, and the rest of this season. We’ll keep our website up to date with monthly ride details.

Want to be a volunteer, ride marshal, or ride leader? We’re still looking for community members who can help. You can sign-up here, and we’ll be in touch!
